The Inspiring Life of Elisabeth Elliot

9.18.24. Chapel Recap

Elisabeth Elliot (1926–2015) was a renowned missionary, author, and speaker whose life was marked by profound faith, resilience, and a deep commitment to sharing the Gospel. She is best known for her work among the Waorani people of Ecuador and for her unshakable trust in God amidst immense personal loss.

In 1956, Elisabeth’s husband, Jim Elliot, and four other missionaries were tragically killed while attempting to share the Gospel with the Waorani, an unreached tribal group. Remarkably, Elisabeth chose to remain in Ecuador with her young daughter and later lived among the very people who had taken her husband’s life. Her love and forgiveness opened the door for many Waorani to come to faith in Christ.

Elisabeth’s writings, including her classic book Through Gates of Splendor, continue to inspire countless believers. A woman deeply familiar with suffering, she reflected, “The deepest things that I have learned in my own life have come from the deepest suffering. And out of the deepest waters and the hottest fires have come the deepest things I know about God.”

Her life stands as a testament to God’s ability to bring beauty from ashes and hope from heartache, showing us what it means to live fully surrendered to His will.
